A New Era Dawns for Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria as Dr. Idris Garba Takes Helm as Registrar/CEO

The Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) has ushered in a new chapter with the official appointment of Dr. Idris Garba as its substantive Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.

The appointment was formalized on March 5, 2026 at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Abuja, where the Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, presented Dr. Garba with his letter of appointment in the presence of top ministry officials, including the Permanent Secretary.

Dr. Garba, a distinguished radiographer, academic, and researcher formerly affiliated with Bayero University Kano (BUK) and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), brings a wealth of expertise to the role. Holding qualifications including DRad, MPhil in Radiography, MTech, BTech, DIR in Radiography, and recognized as a Fellow (FARN/FNM), he has contributed significantly to advancements in medical imaging, dose optimization, and radiation safety through publications and professional engagements.

In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Garba expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to reposition the RRBN to meet and exceed global standards. He emphasized a forward-looking agenda centered on:

  • Strengthening capacity building for radiographers
  • Prioritizing staff welfare
  • Enhancing monitoring, regulation, and enforcement to eliminate quackery
  • Driving digitalization of regulatory processes and professional services

“RRBN will be repositioned to compete with global standards,” Dr. Garba declared, underscoring his vision for a more efficient, innovative, and impactful board that safeguards patient safety and professional excellence.

He extended an open invitation to all Nigerian radiographers to rally behind this new leadership, welcoming their feedback, suggestions, and collaborative efforts to advance the profession.

The transition follows the conclusion of the tenure of the outgoing Registrar, Prof. Mark Chukwudi Okeji, who was commended in recent events including the February 24 commissioning of the South-East Zonal Office in Enugu for his dedicated service and contributions to elevating radiography practice in Nigeria.

This appointment aligns with the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening health regulatory bodies under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, building on restored budgetary support and initiatives to curb malpractices while promoting quality healthcare delivery.

The RRBN remains steadfast in its mandate to regulate radiography education, training, practice, and ethical standards across the country, ensuring safe diagnostic imaging services for all Nigerians.
